Jazz Essay Raised in a home where melodies are often played in the instruments we have or even just hummed by a family member while doing chores, I have grown to love pieces of music especially opera, orchestra and the classics. So when my friends, who are musicians themselves, invited me to one of the performances of a jazz band during the celebration of the University’s anniversary last July 9 at The Technopark, I was feeling rather apprehensive. It is not as what you would expect my genre of choice. I have always typified this particular field as an African-American influenced rhythmic and instrumental form of music. My ears were almost involuntarily programmed to have an distaste to these tunes. But since they started to play, I forgot my earlier impression because I was already enjoying the concert. Savoring the pleasure of listening to the upbeat of jazz music, I was jazzed up and entirely enthralled with the soulful performance of the Jazz Ensemble. In the hands of trumpeter Roy Barja, trombonist Marko Geron, bassist Jeff Flores and saxophonist Brad Cruz, the contrivances took on a unique character, and one whose ebullience can hardly be contained. The ensemble started with a bang of Jazz Story playing different types of jazz music that evolved within the through time until the modern jazz of today. Then, the members of Jazz Ensemble played classics like Victor Young’s â€Å"When I Fall in Love†, George Gershwin’s â€Å"Someone to Watch Over Me† and â€Å"Pink Panther†. With the variety of instruments involved, lush harmonies and textures satiated my ears’ desire for excellent sounds. Each artist had a chance for a nippy glare of publicity. He would play short melodic fragments meant to be repeated by a section of the band with growing passion. They masterfully serenaded and entertained the audience through vocalist Mara Duran who did vocals on â€Å"Orange-colored Sky† and â€Å"It had to be You†. The group kept the crowd swaying and crooning on our seats in time with the beat. Jazz took my heart out from the first notes that had drifted from the instruments up until the faintest tune that was whispered by the wind. That night, I closed my eyes with a trace of smile upon my lips as I hum a segment from the song Love is Here to Stay.

I feel like crying just like I did the night before you left. I had a dream a couple days ago, that ended with a phrase from no particular person saying, "Soon, your love will go through trials and tribulations, and intelligence and patience will fade as your frustration takes over; but, do not falter. Persevere in your true ways, and light will shine again!" I memorized that as I wrote that down after I woke up. Starbucks is the facilitator of globalisation of production as highest quality Arabica beans for coffees are produced in coffee farms in Latin America, Africa and Asia (Starbucks 2010). Although it might seem that globalisation of production can implement high costs on the organisation, in reality it doesn’t. Hill (2009) explains that trans portation costs have declined as well as costs of information processing due to technological development. These changes now allow Starbucks to achieve their goal to serve best quality coffees by dispersing production system.In this way, the company also enjoys lower prices of production due to ability of the chosen locations to produce coffee beans better than let’s say United Kingdom. Antiglobalisation protests Although business leaders and economists insist that international trade and investment is driving global markets towards a greater prosperity, stimulates economic growth and helps to create jobs, globalisation has its critics.The actions of the critics are called globalisation protests (Hill 2009). Critics protest against issues raised by globalisation including job losses in the industries that are attacked from foreign competitors, unfair wages for unskilled workforce, environmental degradation and cultural imperialism (the use of power to spread the values and habits of foreign country under the costs of native country – The University of Florida Interactive Media Lab 2010). Starbucks is no exception in this case.When it decided to cut 600 stores in the US and 61 in Australia cutting of up to 12,000 jobs in America and 685 in the country, this, as said by British journalist â€Å"earned VIP status at the top table of brands that anti-globalisation activists love to hate (cited in O’Neill 2008). This was criticized as the company betrayed it’s view about employees seeing in the heart of the company by cutting job places during difficult economic times in order to save profits. Starbucks was perceived negatively in the UK and other European countries as well. Do the same working hours, wages and benefits should be used?Back in 1999 the concern was raised in Kent, United States, about Starbucks employment practices as the complaints included suspension without pay for swearing or supporting unions, safety issues, unstandartised wage system and denied promotions. To overcome that Shultz introduced healthcare benefits that were welcomed with praise for the company. The benefits were also applied for part-time workers that was seen a good impl ementation of business ethics by US president (Organic Consumers Association 2010). Moreover, individual complains were handled and opportunities provided for the promotion.In general Starbucks has been rated at no. 16 on the list of 100 Best Companies to Work for in 2007 (2008) and no. 11 on the list of best companies for women to work too. All in all, Starbucks tries to implement a standardized employment strategy in its stores worldwide, providing same benefits to the employees and emphasizing the view of workforce being in the heart of the company. Human rights Basic human rights are still not accepted in certain countries.The companies have to inform their employees about the human law so that practices they conduct would be correct. However, Starbucks has already suffered from misconduct of human rig hts. One of the most obvious examples goes to December 2010 when staff locked up opponents of the regime in Bahrain in a branch in the capital Manama (Spencer 2010). Conclusion It can be clearly seen that due to converging markets businesses are trying to expand internationally. Starbucks Coffee Company is not an exception. It now has the largest share of the market and continues to grow. However, not all of the countries converge in the same way, which makes some of them still very distant. However, as the business progress, various risks indicated by the management and traced at an earlier level. This depends on the line of action and other factors like measurement and control. The evalu ation of the business happens in two major ways like the micro, as well as macro factors that needs to be taken into consideration from the point of entry till the time revenue is collected, taxes are paid, profits are distributed, etc (Fernando, 2009). Therefore, the internal control at each level considered under the evaluation of business risk and this leads to tracing of the weak points. However, there is a general tendency that the tracing of any fraud or misstatement is not discovering until it takes a huge form. The accounts department tends to ignore the mistakes that have small mistakes and leads to a path of inherent risks. The business did not take serious steps when it comes to assessment of risk. The Founder, as well as the Managing Director found to making claims that were untrue and fabricated. It portrayed that the business was making strong profits and had surplus but it was altogether a different scenario. As the evaluation of the risk of the business could not be done in an effective manner, it became difficult and complex to uncover the risks that are inherent in nature. If the process were strong then the window dressing can be easily trace. However, the unearthing of the problem happen a common scenario when a grave situation happens. Assembling all these pitfalls, OneTel suffered a huge blow and was unable to operate further. The factors of inherent risk arises directly from the improper attention provided by the management in respect of the ageing debtors, as well as creditors, cheques un cleared, trial balance, as well as other statements. Failure in this respect leads to account balance that is inaccurate in nature. The main changes in the accounting policy by OneTel even enhanced the time for existence, as well as establishment of inherent risks that are unique. Repeatedly, the accounting policies were change that made the entire process complex in nature and hence, ascertaining the account balance became difficult, leading to more risk (Kruger, 2009). Hence, a change in a short sp an of time shakes the foundation and does not go well with the situation. It projects the shortcomings and leads to complexity in terms of understanding. The irregularity in the process of financial reporting tends to question the balances shown by the account and the new auditors question those (Ernst Young), they issued a qualified opinion. However, the previous auditor issues an opinion that unqualified and it covered all the companys malpractices. As per the submission of financial statements to ASIC, projected imbalance in a number of account balances and hence, innumerable expenditures were exposed and losses that were concealed in nature. Hence, the irregularity and ignorance projected by the management led to inherent risk and this occurred due to the accounting mistakes (Heeler, 2009). If the management does not reveal the actual figure, it leads to suppression of relevant facts and ultimately the investors are duped that will not help the community of the shareholders. The main cause that can be attributing to the failure is the ignorance toward s accounts, as the company was involved in marketing, as well as growth. The proper reporting process that pertains to each accounting entry generates the account balance accuracy. This process was disturbed due to mismanagement, as well as internal control mechanism that are weak in nature. Moreover, practices of fraudulent accounting led to inherent risk and the company faced a severe blow (Goodstein, 2011). Therefore, it is imperative from the discussion that the reporting process must be free from any flaws otherwise; it enhances the inherent risk and ultimately leads to downfall. Moreover, the auditor should be strong occupied with the relevant tools and techniques to trace any mistake and should provide an independent decision. The auditors at OneTel failed to carry on their obligation and hence, the entire system became complex in nature (Cook, 2001). The assumption of going concern is the main reason that the organization will continue in the near future and there remains no reason for the wind up. As per the evaluation of the balance sheet, it is evident that that there is a strong increment in the current, as well as non-current assets and liabilities. However, it is a point of ponder that the share capital of the company has increased while the profits has fallen immensely that is not a good indicator. Falling profit does not signify a strong momentum and the stakeholders are always interested in the profit earning capacity of the company (Goodstein, 2011). The losses that accumulated in the previous year stands over 200% in contrast to the last year figure. The income statement is projected that shows the EBIDT in negative numbers. It is clear from this that the loss enhanced in big numbers as the expenses in strong numbers was debit to the profit and loss account. It signifies that the company has two options: either to enha nce the revenues or reduce the debts to wipe of the losses (Cook, 2001). However, the size of the loss stands in huge numbers and it is difficult to get it cleared in one or two pears. This needs the attention and hard work of the management to bail the company out of danger. However, the challenge lies ahead because there are many limitations. The flaws of the company are exposed and even reporting is done by the agencies. It came to the forefront that the Finance Director has failed to authenticate the books, trial balance, journals, ledgers, etc. Moreover, it was a deficiency on the part of the management because the executives failed to perform their duties. There was a big loophole in terms of ageing report of the debtor, listing of cheques, etc. which were left ignored and this led to a severe crisis. Moreover, the entire management performed in a poor manner that weakened every department. If the company continue to operate in such a fashion then it will create a big gulf bet ween profit and loss where the loss figures will stand severe. Such happening will shake the solidity of the company and will create a negative impact on the functioning and deteriorate the goodwill (Kaplan, 2011). Therefore, the concept of going concern is at severe risk and considering the overall scenario, it can be said that financial mismanagement, weak system of internal control and weak financial scenario of the company will affect the going concern concept (Brown et. al, 2006). It should be evaluated quickly. The going concern concept state that the company will run for an indefinite period. However, the company can bear all such situation until a limit. If the company continue to operate in losses and accumulate big losses then it will be difficult to run the company as sources of funds is block and financial mismanagement will bound to occur. A company can perform when the funds move back and forth and the operation are carried on with ease and flexibility. However, once t he crisis strike it will be difficult for the company to operate in such a scenario.
